Ahead Snare Drum Review

Now They Make Drums Too

Drummers know about the great non-wood sticks made by Ahead. Now there’s another piece of equipment to rave about from this innovative percussion company. It’s their Ahead snare drum models. These metal snares feature brass construction that is finished with a black chrome layer. Giving it a glossy, sexy look that will stand out in any kit. These Ahead Black on Brass beauties come in three sizes. The latest is 4×14. Adding a sound distinctly different than the 6×14 and 6×13 models.

A thin, unbeaded brass shell is covered in smoked chrome and pulled together with vintage tube lugs. This gives maximum style as well as ease in adjustment. Snare drum entries into the market usually do not garner a lot of publicity. These from Ahead certainly have grabbed the attention of the percussion world.

Likes

The dynamic components used to put these drums together are the real story. Artfully assembled, they produce a warm sound with absolutely huge volume. You won’t have any trouble cutting through the din to deliver crisp, clear notes that resonate right to the back of the venue. Fat Cat snares featuring 24 wires, 12 of which are adjustable, give full customization to your response.

Drummers appreciate a tailored approach by choosing the 6×13 and 6×14 with either the Dunnett snare release or the Trick snare release to suit the way they play. Any size you choose proves a versatile addition to your sound whether playing live or in the studio.

Dislikes

These snares are relatively new so data about their durability has not been gathered – but that can hardly be a knock against the Ahead snare drum options. If they hold up as well as Ahead drum sticks this will become a positive. Those that have given them a workout expect outstanding service from the Ahead Black on Brass lineup.

Update: since this review was first published the Ahead snare drum line has expanded quite a bit. Take a look at the Ahead snare page for additions.

Overall – 4 Stars

It is rare that a product receives the universal praise the Ahead Black on Brass snare drum has from drummers and reviewers alike. Therefore, we give it 4 Stars.

Add one to your kit and you’ll enjoy a new level of performance no matter what style of music you play.
